Lavender cushions

Another Christmas break project. Small lavender cushions. Two squares of fabric were cut for each cushion from ditsy print fat quarters. Vintage postcard designs were ironed onto the fabric using T-shirt transfer paper. Cushions were stitched on my sewing machine, then stuffing and lavender added. The lavender was collected from my garden at the end of the summer and then dried with a few drops of essential oil added.

The third cushion was made from a crewel embroidery kit that I had stitched a while ago.

I like the way the two East Anglia postcard cushions tie in with my East Anglia themed paintings.

Ribbon wreath

The Christmas break is a great time for catching up on craft projects. This colourful little wreath was simple to make using scraps of ribbon. Take a length of sturdy garden wire and bend into a circle, masking taping the ends to secure. Then take small lengths of ribbon or fabric and knot them around the wire. Use any colour combination you fancy. When the length of wire is full, trim the ends of the ribbon to your desired length.

Ta da! A simple handmade wreath to hang in your home.

Personal work WIP

Here are three small ethereal rural landscape paintings in progress. Created in oil/collage on paper using maps we collected when visiting Ljubljana, Slovenia. These paintings will be trimmed to fit a set of small rustic frames and displayed in our house. A lovely reminder of my birthday weekend. :)

Mariko Mori: Rebirth

The second exhibition I visited at The Royal Academy of Arts was 'Mariko Mori: Rebirth'. This includes some of New York based Japanese artist Mori’s most acclaimed works from the last 11 years, alongside new works created especially for the exhibition. Starting and ending with the death and birth of a star, the cycle of life and rebirth is an important theme of the show, which includes photography, works on paper, sound works, as well as sculpture and large scale immersive installations and environments that invite contemplation.

I found this exhibition exciting, inspiring and mesmerising. Sitting and gazing at some of the large scale light installations made me feel instantly calm and peaceful. I also loved the framed sketches using pencil and glitter. I assume the use of glitter represented stardust. Tickets are £10 for adults, concessions available. The exhibition runs until Sunday 17th February 2013. A must see!

Constable, Gainsborough, Turner and the Making of Landscape

I spent Friday afternoon at The Royal Academy of Arts in London, making good use of my Friends of the RA membership. I headed straight for 'Gainsborough, Turner and the Making of Landscape'. This exhibition shows works by three important painters of English landscapes: John Constable, Thomas Gainsborough and JMW Turner. It explores the development of the British school of landscape painting. A number of works by their contemporaries Richard Wilson, Michael Angelo Rooker and Paul Sandby are also exhibited. Letters by Gainsborough, Turner’s watercolour box and Constable’s palette are on display, bringing their artistic practice to life.

Whilst the exhibition may be worth a visit, it didn't contain very many artworks that excited me, except for Turner's atmospheric painting of 'Dolbadern Castle'. I was interested in Turner's watercolour box, Constable's palette and the other pieces of art paraphernalia. This exhibition contains a lot of engravings and mezzotints, as a lover of colour I would have preferred to have seen more luscious oils. It's also quite a short exhibition, containing 150 pieces. Tickets are £8 for adults, concessions available. The exhibition runs until Sunday 17th February 2013.
