I've nearly finished my last commission and so have started a new ethereal landscape painting. This abstract landscape will have a predominantly white, purple and pink palette and is created on a 300 x 300 mm deep edge canvas.

Lady Gaga, The Monster's Ball, 02, London

"The Monster's Ball will set you free, London! Tonight we're gonna be super freaks!" So begins another outrageous evening with the everso bonkers Lady Gaga. More outlandish costumes and a ton of hits turned the 02 Arena into a two hour non-stop party last night. Gaga informed her screaming crowd of 'little monsters' that she is to tour again in 2011 with the release of her new album 'Born this Way', and shared one new track from that new album entitled 'You and I'. As in February this year, she finished her set with 'Bad Romance', which is still my fave.

NEW collaboration

'Le Poulet est Dans la Rue' by Andrea Farmer and Rob Kirbyson. I created the textured background on a 255 x 255 mm deep edge box canvas. Rob completed the foreground.

This is an ongoing project between members of Rogue Gene Collective. Two artists collaborate together on one artwork. One creates the background, the other the foreground with no discussion between them as to how the finished piece will appear. There is no set subject matter. This has produced interesting results and allowed each artist an insight into how the other works through the creative process.

WIP landscape commission

Mentioned in a previous blog post, here is the fourth commission in progress. Based on my ethereal landscape painting 'Amongst the Rushes' - this piece has been commissioned by the same buyer as the original one. This version is slightly larger than the original and the brief is to get it as close as possible in composition to the original painting. The mark making technique I use is fairly random, so this will be an interesting challenge!

'Heavenly Waters' - NEW coastal landscape painting

'Heavenly Waters' by Andrea Farmer
'Heavenly Waters' is the latest addition to my coastal landscape collection. This painting was inspired by the many Essex coastlines I visited over the summer. Created in oil, ink and mixed media on 610 x 460 mm canvas board. Unframed. You can purchase this painting from my online gallery.

1 down, 2 to go

Two of the four commissions are now complete. Hooray! 'We Are Family' and 'Fading Memory' floral landscape paintings will be on their way to new homes very soon. 'Dying Light II' commission needs to hurry up and dry so I can add the last details and then varnish. I plan to start 'Amongst the Rushes II' commission this week. In the meantime, I am finishing off some other work that I previously featured as WIP on this blog.

'Beach Pebbles' painting in situ

I love getting feedback from buyers. It's rare to receive a photo of your painting hanging in its new home though, so I thought I would share this one with you. 'Beach Pebbles' now lives with a lovely lady in Germany in her recently redecorated apartment. Here is the e-mail (photo and text reproduced with kind permission from the author):

"Dear Andrea. Your artwork 'Beach Pebbles' is finally hanging over my breakfast bar. The wall on the very right edge of the picture will be painted in a very light apricot tone, the door in the background in white and the door frame in bright orange. My mum laughed out loud at the title, by the way, as one of my nicknames is Pebbles, a) because it resembles my name Baerbel, and b) because when I was a child we all loved to watch the Flintstones on TV, and the daughter's called Pebbles, too. Thanks again for this lovely piece of art, which has so much meaning to me. Best wishes, Baerbel."

The two poppy landscape paintings are commissions too, and need to be completed before Christmas. The smaller paintings shown will be available to purchase through my website when completed.

The Divine Comedy, The Lexington, London

Hubby and I went to see Neil Hannon AKA The Divine Comedy last night. Possibly the smallest venue I have ever watched Neil Hannon in, The Lexington pub situated in Islington, London was a fantastic venue with an audience of approx 250. We really liked one of the support bands called The Wutars, however, we weren't so keen on all girl band Lulu and the Lampshades (sorry!). The event was organised by Word Magazine and featured a guest appearance by Mark Radcliffe who drew the raffle! Despite our close proximity to Mr Hannon, we didn't manage to get any decent photographs, but hubby managed to record a fab movie of 'Tonight We Fly'. Enjoy!

Colchester Zoo, Essex

I had a fantastic day at Colchester Zoo today with Jan and her son Tayte. It was spooky Hallow'een Day at the zoo, so it was open late with lots of scarey themed events including a visit to the frightening forest and the ghost train (yes, I did scream). I don't generally like the idea of animals kept in captivity, but Colchester Zoo is very well maintained and the animals seem very happy in their surroundings. My favourites, as ever, are the giraffes, penguins and goats. We were very lucky to see the penguins be fed on this occasion. As you can see, Jan and Tayte had their faces painted. LOL.

From Maldon to Heybridge Basin

Todays outing was a VERY long walk from Maldon to Heybridge Basin, Essex. Heybridge Basin is located at the end of the 13 mile Chelmer & Blackwater Navigation and contains the sea lock which joins the canal to the Blackwater estuary. It boasts stunning views and lots of wildlife. Hubby and I followed the coastal path all the way to the lock where we stopped for lunch in The Old Ship pub, before walking back to Maldon.

Oaklands Museum, Chelmsford

On Monday hubby and I visited Oaklands Museum. Home of Grayson Perry's pot 'The Chelmsford Sissies'  there was also a fantastic collection of art, coins, ceramics, pottery and glass - alongside exhibitions about Community Life, The Story of Chelmsford and Natural Sciences. You can also visit The Essex Regiment Museum and The Essex Yeomanry. The museum is situated in Oaklands Park, off Moulsham Street in Chelmsford, Essex. Admission is free. Well worth a visit if you are in the area.

Saturday, 9 October 2010

I spent much of last night working on a new floral landscape painting. As I work in oil, I generally have to work in layers, allowing the first layer of paint to dry before applying the second and so on. Last night I made a start on the flowers. These will need more detail, as will the background. It will take a few more sessions to complete this painting. I will post the final version here on my blog.

Wednesday, 29 September 2010

Inspired by my recent visit to Wivenhoe, I fancied painting a boat. Here's my semi-abstract version of an old blue rowing boat on the shoreline with some wild poppies. I've incorporated some areas of texture and mark making. The poppies add a splash of vibrant colour and balance the composition. It needs a bit more work though. The other painting is an abstract coastal poppy scene on paper.

'The Fallen' - NEW ethereal coastal landscape painting

Wivenhoe, Essex

Hubby and I visited Wivenhoe on Monday. Wivenhoe is a quaint town in Essex, approximately three miles from Colchester. The village is on the banks of the River Colne and Wivenhoe Cross. The town's history centres around fishing, ship building, and smuggling - and is considered to have a bohemian quality, popular with local artists and writers. Much of Wivenhoe is also a designated conservation area, with many streets being of particular architectural interest. We had a lovely day wandering around in the sunshine, stopping for lunch in the Rose & Crown pub overlooking the river. We also liked looking at the fishing boats. I feel a boat themed coastal painting may be next on the agenda.
